Brief Biography-Berrettini, known as Pietro da Cortona, architect, and painter, was born in Cortona. His uncle Filippo Berrettini tutored him with the artist Andrea Commodi before entering the atelier of Baccio Ciarpi. In Rome, he studied the works of Michelangelo and Raphael. His work caught the attention of Pope Urban VIII, who commissioned him to paint in the church of Santa Bibiana. The artist Agostino Ciampelli resented a young man undertaking such work until he realised what he could achieve. His success on that task led to further commissions. He visited Venice, and Grand Duke Ferdinand II employed him to paint in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. However, during his stay, he fell out with some artists who were jealous of him, leaving Florence without finishing some work. In Rome, he worked for Alexander VII, who bestowed on him the order of the Golden Spur. He was mainly a painter of frescoes but also did many easel paintings. He died in Rome in 1669. |
