Brief Biography-Thomas Couture, the history painter, was born in Senlis, France. He studied at the École des Arts et Métiers and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris; Antoine Jean Gros was one of his teachers. The painting The Romans of the Decadence was his most acclaimed work. He established an atelier where he taught history painting; Henri Fantin-Latour and Édouard Manet were two of his many notable students. He was the author of the book Méthode et entretiens d’atelier about the functions of ateliers. He died in 1879. |
