Aelbert Cuyp
1620-1691 Netherlands/Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Aelbert Jacobsz Cuyp came from a family of painters in Dordrecht, Jacob Gerritsz was his father, and Benjamin Gerritsz was a half-brother. Aelbert was the most famous of the three. His father, Jacob, tutored him, and the works of Jan van Goyen
influenced him. He rarely ventured outside Holland except for Westphalia, where he painted several landscapes. He was primarily known for his view paintings.
He married a wealthy widow in 1658 and ceased to paint for the remainder of his life. After his death until the late eighteenth century, he was largely forgotten when art lovers in England discovered his works. There, more of his paintings survive than in Holland. In addition, many pictures once attributed to him are now assigned to Abraham Calraet with the same initials. |
