Paul Delaroche
1797-1856 France/Romanticism
|
Brief Biography-Paul Delaroche was from Paris, where he spent his life apart from visits to Italy. He was the son-in-law of Horace Vernet and was associated with Jean Louis André Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix, who were fellow historical painters in Paris. His principal teacher was Antoine-Jean Gros, a student of Jacques-Louis David. The works of Auguste Dominique Ingres also influenced him. He was a highly successful artist and became a Knight of the Legion de Honour in 1828.
He taught at the École des Beaux-Arts, and many of his students became successful artists, such as Tony Robert-Fleury, Gustave Clarence Rodolphe Boulanger and many more. One of his most famous paintings was the 27 metres long mural series of the history of the École des Beaux-Arts called The Hemicycle. Unfortunately, Delaroche died in 1856 while repairing the mural after being damaged by fire the year before. |
