Jules-Élie Delaunay

Brief Biography-Jules-Elie Delaunay, the academic artist from Nantes, painted landscapes, portraits, and historical subjects. He studied under Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. On winning the Prix de Rome, he travelled to Rome, where he stayed for four years. When he returned to Paris, he became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1879 and subsequently led a successful career in painting frescoes. Portraiture was one of his more fruitful fields; however, some of his most noted works were the Opera Garnier in the staircase of the City Hall of Paris and the nave of the Pantheon Paris. |
