Anglo-Irish Mother-Travel Artist
|
Brief Biography-Augustus Earle, born in London, was a nephew of Ralph Earl. Known as ‘the wandering artist,’ he toured every continent except the north and south poles. He sketched indigenous peoples wherever he travelled, and one could almost describe him as an anthropologist as he documented colonial outreaches. His work would have been educational to many of his time. His last adventure was sailing on the Beagle to South America with Captain Fitzroy. The Royal Academy exhibited many of his paintings between 1806 and 1838. |
