James Ensor

Brief Biography-James Ensor was born in Ostend in 1860. He studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. Ensor spent his entire life in Ostend, making only a few short trips abroad. His style was a mixture of expressionism, fauvism, surrealism, and symbolism, which initially came under harsh criticism. However, later Ensor became a highly revered artist in Belgium and Germany. One of his many notable admirers whom he strongly influenced was the German painter Emil Nolde. |
