Anselm Friedrich Feuerbach
1829-1880 Germany/Romanticism
|
Brief Biography-Anselm Feuerbach, the son of archaeologist Joseph A Feuerbach, was born in Speyer, Germany, in 1829. When he was seventeen, he enrolled in the Düsseldorf Academy and studied under Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow. In 1848, Feuerbach went to the Munich Academy and then to Antwerp, entering the atelier of Gustave Wappers. In 1852, he studied under Thomas Couture in Paris; during his time there, Gustave Courbet's and Eugene Delacroix's works influenced him greatly. His last destination was Italy, where he stayed for the remainder of his life, save a three-year break teaching in Vienna. The Italian masters had a lasting impression on him, especially Raphael. He died in Venice in 1880. |
