Mariano Fortuny y Marsal

Brief Biography-Mariano (MariĆ ) Fortuny y Marsal was born in Reuss, Barcelona. He painted in oil and watercolour and was an etcher and engraver. Fortuny first studied in Barcelona before going to Rome in 1858. In Spain, the Barcelona government dispatched him to Morocco to cover the Spanish war with Morocco, and he later put his sketches on canvas. The works of f Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier and Goya influenced his painting; however, after Morocco, Orientalism influenced his work. He married Cecilia de Madrazo, the daughter of Federico de Madrazo, in 1868. They spent time in Paris and Granada before he went to Rome, where he died of a sudden illness in 1874. The Battle of Tetouan is his most famous painting. |
