Emanuel Phillips Fox

1865-1915 Australia/Impressionism

 

Brief Biography-Emanuel Phillips Fox was born in Melbourne in 1865. He studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art before going to Europe. The École des Beaux-Arts in Paris admitted him in 1887, and Fox studied under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Jean-Léon Gérôme. In 1892. Fox set up a school in Melbourne, where he taught until 1901 when he went to London and became a success in Paris. He finally settled back in Melbourne, where he died in 1915. Emanuel Phillips Fox was the first Australian impressionist artist of considerable note to have come out of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
