|
Brief Biography-Andrew Geddes was born in Edinburgh in 1783. On his father’s death, who disapproved of him doing art, he took up the profession and entered London’s Royal Academy schools in 1807. Geddes settled in London in 1814 and frequented Edinburgh every year. Sir David Wilkie, whom he studied with at the Academy, became a close friend. He painted his portrait and submitted it with others to the Royal Academy for honours, but they did not accept it. In 1828, Geddes toured France, Germany, and Italy, and in 1832 the Associateship to the Academy was granted. He visited Holland in 1839, where Rembrandt’s works influenced his etching. He died in London in 1844. |
