Brief Biography-Geertgen tot Sint Jans of Haarlem is said to have been a pupil of Albert van Ouwater, a Haarlem resident and founder of the Haarlem school. Geertgen became a member of the Knights of Saint John in Haarlem, where he took his name, meaning Little Gerard of the Brethren of Saint John. His most recognised work is two sides of a triptych of the crucifixion painted for the Order of Saint John, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. More of his paintings are in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Louvre Paris. |
