1703-1766 Italy/Spain-Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Corrado Giaquinto was born in Molfetta, Southern Italy. His initial training was in his hometown before he went on to study under Francesco Solimena in Naples. Luca Giordano later influenced him. While working in Rome, one of his students was José del Castillo. Castillo accompanied him to Madrid when Ferdinand VI summoned him in 1753. In Madrid, he became Director of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and supervisor of the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Bárbara. Other prominent students of his were Antonio González Velázquez and Mariano Salvador de Maella. In addition, Giaquinto received numerous commissions in Spain, notably two frescoes in the Royal Palace. He returned to Naples in 1762, where he died four years later. |
