Mateo Gilarte

Brief Biography-Mateo Gilarte was born in Valencia, where he trained in the arts before moving to Murcia. He painted with oil and distemper for frescoes. With the assistance of his brother Francesco, he painted oils and frescoes in the Church of Our Lady del Rosario. His most noted work is the Battle of Lepanto with the help of the renowned Juan de Toledo, Captain of Horses. According to Palomino, he died in 1700. His daughter Magdalena also painted much in his style for the cloisters of churches. |
