Nicolae Grigorescu

Brief Biography-Nicolae Grigorescu was born in Pitaru, Romania in 1838. The family moved to Bucharest in 1845. A few years later, Nicolae entered the atelier of an artist named Anton Chladek. In 1861, after painting the churches of the monasteries Zamfira and Agapia, he gained a scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He spent time with the Barbizon school of artists, where plein-air painting influenced him. Ion Andreescu worked with him at the school. After touring Southern Europe, the Romanian Army enlisted him to paint during the independence war, and he made several sketches that he painted after the war. He set up a studio in Paris until 1890 before going to Câmpina, where he lived his last years. In 1899, the Romanian Academy named him an honorary member. |
