James Guthrie

Brief Biography-James Guthrie was born in Greenock in 1859. He left university to paint in 1877. Guthrie was first a disciple of James Drummond and then John Pattie in London. He annually returned to Scotland to paint landscapes, and in 1882, he travelled to Paris. Jean-François Milletinfluenced him, but he was mainly impressed by Jules Bastien-Lepage. He decided to take up portraiture in England and became quite successful. James Abbot McNeill Whistler influenced his style. He received several commissions from notable people and had many honours, including a Knighthood in 1903. In his later years, he was president of the Royal Scottish Academy. |
