Julie Wilhelmine Hagen-Schwarz

1824-1902 Estonia/Portraitist

 

Brief Biography-Julie Wilhelmine Hagen-Schwarz, portraitist and daughter of Augustus Matthias Hagen, studied at the University of Tartu. She received funding to be a student of Moritz Rugendas in Germany for three years, after which she went to Italy with her father to study. On her return, she married the astronomer Ludwig Schwarz with whom she travelled to Siberia on an expedition, sketching as she went. She spent her later years in Saint Petersburg, where she was the first female nominated to the Imperial Academy of Arts.
