William Hart

1823-1894 America born-Scotland/Landscapist

Brief Biography-William Hart of the Hudson River School was born in Scotland. However, the family moved to America when he was a child. Hart began his tuition in New York as a coach painter and from the French artist Jules Joseph Lefebvre. Portraiture was his first endeavour, but with no success, he decided to take up landscape painting. Hart eventually exhibited at the National Academy of Design and was later instrumental in establishing the American Watercolour Society leading to his substantial success as a landscapist. His younger brother James McDougal Hart and his sister Julie Hart Beers were also Hudson River School artists.
