Brief Biography-John Frederick Herring Senior, one of the foremost British horse painters, was born in Surrey in 1795. He was a ‘Highflyer’ stage coachman who first painted carriages and went on to paint horses. Herring’s most famous works were the winners of the St. Leger Stakes in Doncaster for over thirty-three years. He spent time in Newcastle before settling back in London in 1833. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. Herring accepted commissions from Queen Victoria and the Duke of Orleans. He lived in Kent for his later years, painting mainly rural scenes. John Frederick Herring Junior also became a successful painter. |
