James Holland

1799-1870 England/Romanticism-Watercolours

 

Brief Biography-James Holland was born in Staffordshire, England, in 1799. He began painting pottery in a factory along with his father at an early age. In 1819, he painted in London and taught drawing, eventually exhibiting at the Royal Academy, and becoming a member of The Society of Painters in Water-colours by 1856. His interest in architecture brought him to many European countries producing several paintings and drawings for book illustrations. Most of his work was with water-colour; however, he also painted in oils.
