Winslow Homer
1836-1910 America/Realism-Plein Air
|
Brief Biography-Winslow Homer of Massachusetts was born in 1836. His popular subjects were marine, genre and landscape painting. His only master was his mother, who was an amateur watercolourist. Winslow’s father had him apprenticed as an illustrator, where he worked for many years, primarily for Harper’s Weekly. They sent him to cover the civil war, which he sketched for four years, afterwards exhibiting at the National Academy of Design, and was elected full Academician in 1865.
He spent two years in Tynemouth, England, where he painted coastal scenes en plein air and developed a more mature style. On returning to America, he lived in Maine. His most famous images are in oil and watercolour from the Maine coastline. Later, he became relatively successful, and his paintings demanded high prices. In 1910, he died in his studio in Prouts Neck. |
