Johann Hulsman

Brief Biography-Johann Hulsman, or Holzmann, was born in Cologne. He was a pupil of Augustin Braun, Frans and Dirck Hals and Jurgen Ovens influenced his work. He was a painter, etcher, graphic artist, and draughtsman. Johann Toussyn assisted him with a Cologne altarpiece. The nobility of Cologne commissioned his work. He was a citizen and master in the guild in 1637. He also became active in Antwerp, Frankfurt, and Italy. Johann Frans Ermels was a pupil of his alongside the portraitist Johannes Buns, who had been a pupil of Govert Teunisz Flinck in Amsterdam. |
