Kārlis Hūns

Brief Biography-Kārlis Hūns was born in the Governorate of Livonia. He received his education in Riga, and from there, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg under the Russian artist Pyotr Basin. A fellowship in 1863 permitted him to go to Germany, from where he went on to Paris until 1872, he became an Academician and professor in Saint Petersburg that year, and he was associated with the Society Travelling Art Exhibitions. He got married in 1874; however, he had to venture throughout Europe afterwards to seek better climates due to the onset of tuberculosis. He eventually died in Switzerland in 1877. His works were of genre and religious subjects. He was the first Latvian artist to receive a Gold Medal. |
