Brief Biography-Akseli Valdemar Gallén-Kallela was born in Pori, Finland in 1865. He studied at the Finnish Art Society in Helsinki in 1881 and the Académie Julian in Paris in 1884. In Paris, he became acquainted with Albert Edelfelt, a proponent of realism and en plein air. He was famed for painting the Finnish epic Kalevala in a Symbolist style. He visited Berlin, Florence, and London, gaining international recognition at the Paris Exposition of 1900. He later spent time in Kenya and America with his family, taking inspiration from native art. Gallén-Kallela died in Stockholm in 1931. The public can view his frescoes in Helsinki’s National Museum of Finland. |
