Christen Købke

1810-1848 Denmark/Romanticism

Brief Biography-Christen Schiellerup Købke was born in Copenhagen in 1810. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy under Christian August Lorentzen and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. He lived at Sortedam Lake in 1834, painting the neighbouring scenery, and married in 1837. A year later, he travelled to Italy, visiting several cities. Unfortunately, Købke never gained admittance to the Danish Academy, and his work was not well received during his lifetime. Nevertheless, today he is regarded as one of the foremost painters of the Danish Golden Age.
