Christian Krohg

Brief Biography-Christian Krohg was born in Oslo in 1852. He obtained a law degree at the University of Christiania. During his law studies, he studied art privately under Fredrik Eckersberg, followed by instructions from Hans Gude at the School of Art in Karlsruhe. In Berlin, he gained considerable experience and painted in a naturalist form. In 1879, he visited Skagen in Northern Denmark, where Scandinavian artists gathered annually to paint en en plein air; they impressed him greatly. He also helped other members of the Skagen group, including Edvard Munch. In Paris, he exhibited at the salon where he lived between 1901 and 1909 and taught at the Académie Colarossi. On his return to Oslo, he became Director at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture, which he held for his life. Krohg received numerous honours throughout his career. |
