Kawanabe Kyōsai 河鍋 暁斎

1831-1889 Japan/Edo to Meiji Period

 

Brief Biography-Kawanabe Kyōsai was born at Koga in 1831. He trained at the Kanō School. Katsushika Hokusai influenced his paintings, and he became a caricaturist. The authorities of the shogunate arrested him due to his political parodies. Kyōsai later worked for magazines doing cartoons for various subjects. He wrote a successful piece named 'Kyōsai's Treatise on Painting', which also includes a part autobiography.
