Georges de La Tour
1593-1652 France/Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Georges de La Tour, from Vic-sur-Seille in France, spent most of his life with his family in Lorraine. He painted mainly in Caravaggio's style with an emphasis on chiaroscuro. Some of his images are tenebrist, a term rarely used in the description. There is also an influence of French classicism in his works on religious and genre subjects. He only produced a small number of pieces, estimated to be roughly forty; however, the nobility of his time collected his paintings, and he gained the title of Painter in Ordinary to the King. He sadly died along with his wife during an epidemic in 1652. |
