James Latham

1696-1747 Ireland/Baroque

Brief Biography-James Latham of Thurles, County Tipperary, was born in 1696. From 1724 to 1725, he was a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp, and he spent time in Paris, where he learned to paint in a French style. Garret Morphey (Morphey) and Stephen Slaughter may have also influenced his work in Ireland. Two of his most noted portraits are of General Thomas Bligh and Pole Cosby and his daughter Sarah. One critic proclaimed Latham to be the Irish Anthony Van Dyck.
