Jean-Jules-Antoine Lecomte du Nouÿ

1842-1923 France/Orientalism

 

Brief Biography-Jean-Jules-Antoine Lecomte du Nouÿ was born in Paris in 1842. His first master was Charles Gleyre, followed by Jean-Léon Gérôme, the most noted exponent of Academicism. Through his travels to Egypt and East Europe, his paintings are predominantly orientalist. He lived and worked in Romania, painting nobility, before retiring to Paris, where he died in 1923.
