Brief Biography-Frederic Leighton, Lord Leighton of Stretton) was born in Scarborough in 1830. His first studies were in Rome and Florence before studying at the Städelsche Institute in Frankfurt with Eduard von Steinle. He lived in Paris for four years and eventually settled in London in 1860. His masterpiece Cimabue’s Madonna Borne in Procession was lauded by all and purchased by Queen Victoria. He became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1864 and was appointed President of the Academy in 1878. Leighton was primarily an Academician, but the Pre-Raphaelite movement also influenced him. He famously received a Peerage in 1896 and died the day after receiving it. |
