Pietro Longhi
1702-1783 Italy/Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Pietro Longhi was born and died in Venice. He was a genre painter and engraver who was a disciple of Antonio Balestra and Giuseppe Maria Crespi. He recorded daily life scenes in Venice and did several religious paintings. Longhi became director of the Venice Academy of Drawing in 1763. His works are often mistakenly likened to Hogarth's. However, Longhi’s scenes are a much less dramatic insight into the domestic life of Venice. |
