William Stewart MacGeorge

1861-1931 Scotland/Plein air

Brief Biography-William Stewart MacGeorge was born in Castle Douglas in 1861. He began studies in 1880 with the Trustees Academy on the Mound in Edinburgh. MacGeorge went to Antwerp’s Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in 1883 with Edward Atkinson Hornel of Kirkcudbright, who influenced his work. He worked in Edinburgh and Galloway for most of his career and married and settled in East Lothian. On his death, his widow left many of his paintings to the town of Haddington. As with Hornel, Jules Bastien-Lepage’s influence is evident in his works.
