Brief Biography-Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta was born into a family of artists. His father Federico and grandfather José taught him. His Uncle Luis and Brother Ricardo were also painters. Raimundo studied at Madrid’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. The works of Alfred Stevens, the Belgium artist noted for portraits of elegant women, influenced him. He visited Paris and studied under Léon Cogniet before venturing to New York, where he sold his works to notable collectors such as The Vanderbilts. For the latter part of his life, he lived in Paris, visiting Rome and staying in Granada during the Franco-Prussian war, before retiring to Versailles. |
