Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz

1815-1894 Spain/Neoclassicism

 

Brief Biography-Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz, born in Rome, the son of portraitist José de Madrazo y Agudo, studied under Franz Xaver Winterhalter in Paris. Federico was from a family of artists, and his sons Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta and Ricardo Federico de Madrazo y Garreta were also successful painters. He also found considerable success as a portraitist, obtained the Legion de Honour in 1846, became a correspondent of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1853, and was Appointed painter-in-ordinary to the Court of Spain. Federico was Director of the Museo del Prado after his father retired and became the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando president. He died in 1894 in Madrid.
