Nicolaes Maes

1634-1693 Holland/Baroque

Brief Biography-Nicolaes Maes was born in Dordrecht and became a disciple of Rembrandt between 1648 and 1665. He lived in Antwerp until 1678 when he settled in Amsterdam for the remainder of his days. He was a painter of genre scenes primarily in his earlier years, and later, with a change of style, he mainly painted portraits. Speculation had it that the extreme shift in his style meant his works were by another painter of the same name; however, altering styles was a trend among some Dutch artists.
