Hans Memling
c. 1430-1494 Belgium (Born-Germany)/Northern Renaissance
|
Brief Biography-Hans Memling from Frankfurt did his apprenticeship in Cologne art before moving to Brussels. He worked in the Atelier Rogier van der Weyden and later settled in Bruges, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He enjoyed a successful career in Bruges doing portraits and religious works. There is an indication of influence from the style of Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden in his works.
His portraits were especially famous in Italy. The Medici family of Florence, numerous businesspeople of Bruges, and agents of the Hanseatic League commissioned several of his paintings. The Shrine of Saint Ursula in the Hospital of Saint John is just one of his many well-known religious works. |
