Jacob More

1740-1793 Scotland/Romanticism

 

Brief Biography-Jacob More was born in Edinburgh in 1740. He studied at Runciman’s School of Art in Edinburgh. In 1773 More visited Italy and was enormously impressed by the paintings of Claude Lorrain. He remained in Italy and became successful in Rome, where he settled and was acquainted with Alan Ramsey. He exhibited at the London Royal Academy from 1884 to 1789. Goethe, who appreciated his paintings, visited him in his Rome studio. His self-portrait hangs in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
