Gustave Moreau

Brief Biography-Gustave Moreau was born in Paris in 1826. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and was later elected a member, receiving the Legion de Honour in 1885, and he taught from 1892 to 1898; Matisse was one of his many notable students. Moreau associated closely with Théodore Chassériau while taking over the studio of Jules-Élie Delaunay after his death. He was a painter of Biblical and Mythological subjects in a symbolist style for which he became renowned. His studio in Paris is now the Musée national Gustave-Moreau. |
