Thomas Mower Martin

1838-1934 English-Emigrated to Canada

 

Brief Biography-Thomas Mower Martin was born in London in 1838. He was self-taught as a painter and moved with his wife to Canada in 1862, where he became successful in Toronto. Mower Martin toured North America and later worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway, painting sceneries in Western Canada. In addition, he was with the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists, the Ontario Society of Artists, and the Ontario Government Art school. Mower Martin later joined the Swedenborgian church and produced numerous religious booklets, and his paintings ranged from landscapes to still lifes. He had nine children and lived to the ripe age of 96. Mower Martin was the foremost Canadian landscape painter of his time.
