Aert van der Neer

c. 1603-1677 Netherlands/Baroque

Brief Biography-Aert van der Neer was born c. 1603 in Gorinchem. He was a painter of canals and winter scenes in the manner of Hendrick Avercamp and Esaias van de Velde; however, his works never sold well during his lifetime. Aelbert Cuyp collaborated with him on some of his paintings. They were usually not more than five guilders each. He failed in the business of wine tapping and thereafter lived a life of relative poverty. His sons Eglon and Jan also became painters, Eglon being the most successful.
