Brief Biography-Giuseppe de Nittis, from Barletta, Italy, studied at the Naples Institute of Fine Arts. His influences were the Macchiaioli group of artists who aspired to en plein air or outdoor painting. In Paris, he achieved considerable success by associating with many impressionist artists such as Edgar Degas. He helped promote the use of pastels, and his works impressed James McNeill Whistler. He received the Légion d’Honneur before suddenly dying of a stroke when he was 38. |
