Walter Frederick Osborne

Brief Biography-Walter Frederick Osborne was born in Dublin in 1859, the son of the racehorse painter William Osbourne. He studied at the Royal Hibernian Academy Schools and won the Taylor Scholarship twice before studying in Antwerp and Brittany until 1883. He painted in several locations in England and Ireland while exhibiting at the RHA, the Royal Academy, and the New England Art Club. Jules Bastien-Lepage and James McNeill Whistler made an impression on him which is evident in many of his paintings. Sir William Quiller Orchardson influenced his portraiture. Manet and Renoir later influenced his pictures after encountering their works in Paris. Osbourne, unfortunately, died of pneumonia in 1903. Besides his portraits, he is famed for his depictions of Dublin slum life in the late nineteenth century. |
