Kārlis Padegs
1911-1940 Latvia/Expressionism
|
Brief Biography-Kārlis Padegs was born in Riga, where he spent the entirety of his life except for a brief period during his youth in Tartu, Estonia. Vilhelms Purvītis was his tutor at the Latvian Academy of Art, which Purvītis founded. One cannot attribute his influences to any particular artist other than a broad spectrum of post-impressionist artists; his art was mostly original. His subject matter was somewhat outside the norm, as in his most famous painting, Madonna with a Machine Gun, painted in 1932, his style is expressionism. Some described his personality as a socialite or man about town. Padegs sadly died in 1940 of tuberculosis at the early age of twenty-eight. |
