Brief Biography-Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, also known as Parmigianino, meaning the little one from Parma, was born in 1503. He was a painter and etcher in the mannerist style who came under the influence of Correggio. Parmigianino worked on chapels in Parma before going to Rome in 1524. The paintings of Michelangelo and Raphael impressed him; however, he left due to the Germans’ plunder of the city in 1527. He eventually returned to Parma via Bologna in 1531. Unfortunately, Parmigianino got imprisoned for not finishing contracted frescoes in Santa Maria della Steccata. When freed, he went to Casalmaggiore, where he completed the Madonna with Saint Stephen and Saint John the Baptist, and a year later, he died from a fever as a young man. Aside from religious paintings, Parmigianino was a renowned portraitist. |
