Antônio Parreiras

1860-1937 Brazil/Plein Air

Brief Biography-Antônio Parreiras was born near Rio de Janeiro in 1860, where he attended the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes in 1882. However, after a stay of only two years at the Academia, he became mainly self-taught. A sale of a painting to Pedro II enabled him to study in Venice; back home, he set up a school called the "Open Air School", emphasising a plein-air style. He also worked in Paris and was a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Parreiras was Brazil's leading artist in his day.
