Brief Biography-Joseph Noel Paton, a painter of fantasy, religious and historical works, was born in Dunfermline, Fife, in 1821. Paton studied at the Dunfermline Art Academy and London’s Royal Academy, becoming acquainted with John Everett Millais. The latter, along with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, influenced his work. In 1856, he was a fellow of the Royal Scottish Academy, and in 1866, he became Her Majesty’s Limner in Scotland. As a result, Queen Victoria acquired many of his paintings and bestowed him a knighthood in 1867. Paton was also a Poet, a collector of armour and an archaeologist. He settled in Edinburgh, where he died in 1901. |
