Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro

1857-1929 Portugal/Realism

 

Brief Biography-Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro of Lisbon was the son and brother of artists Manuel Maria and Rafael. His father trained him, and the Portuguese portraitist Miguel Lupi influenced him. A patron financed him to study in Paris, where the realists Courbet and Manet. His works consisted of portraits, mostly of Portuguese notables such as the poet Antero de Quental and other renowned writers. He was part of The Lion’s Group, made up of artists and writers from Lisbon for discussion on many topics. Pinheiro became director of the now Chiado Museum, Lisbon, which houses many of his works.
