Alexander Promet

1879-1938 Estonia/Graphic Artist

Brief Biography-Alexander Promet was born on Kreenholm Island in Narva, which contained a factory where his father worked. He began his studies as a textile artist at the Saint Petersburg School of Art in Stieglitz. He won an international scholarship which brought him to London; however, he soon left for Paris to enter the art world. Due to losing his fellowship, he returned to Estonia in 1906, where he became a member of the Estonian Art Association. Promet worked out of Tartu and Narva and later taught in Tallinn before going to Petrograd to continue painting. The War of Independence brought him back to Estonia, and he eventually settled in Tallinn as a teacher and freelance writer. Unfortunately, he was very ill for four years due to vascular calcification. Nevertheless, he painted numerous works based on the tales of Kalevipoeg.
