Brief Biography-Allan Ramsay, the portraitist and son of the poet Allan Ramsay, was born in Edinburgh in 1713. He studied under the Swiss artist Hans Hysing in London and visited Italy. After a short spell in Edinburgh, Ramsay went to London in 1762 and established himself as a successful portraitist with his continental influence. In 1767 he became Painter in Ordinary to George III. Two of his many assistants were David Martinand Philip Reinagle. Ramsay was also a writer of essays; he spent more time on literature after an accident and regularly communicated with scholars such as Voltaire and Rousseau. Ramsay’s works were in equal standing with Reynolds and Gainsborough at the time of his death. |
